Start an Animal Hospital – Steps to take

When in the position to no longer work for others and start your own animal hospital, the opportunity is not one that should be missed. Preparation is extensive and a good business plan will help you go a long way. There are just a number of steps that need to be taken in order to turn that plan into a reality.

Here are steps that need to be taken to start an animal hospital:

  • Find an existing facility to remodel to your specifications or land to build one from scratch. Either way, contractors will be needed once the remodeling/building process is to begin. No matter what, however, the area needs to be easily accessible so that clients don’t have a problem reaching it. It is also possible to lease a building if buying is not an option. It should be kept in mind, however, that leasing works when using a facility for a short period of time rather than long-term. This is usually an option when financing is limited, but better financing can be acquired in the future to buy the location or purchase or build a new one.
  • Because treating pets can potentially lead to legal issues, it is best to avoid legal issues from the beginning by going ahead and hiring a lawyer and a certified public accountant (CPA). Sometimes, it is possible to find a lawyer who is also a CPA, which can simplify things in regards to needing assistance with financials as well. What this individual or individuals will do is set you on the right path from the very beginning and help you any time an issue comes about.
  • You will need to find vendors to purchase equipment and supplies from.
  • Before buying or building a facility, financing can be acquired through a financial institution and/or investors. The business plan will need to be presented to them for them to see what it is you wish to accomplish and whether or not providing you the loan is feasible. You will need to include all costs, marketing plans, and exactly what the animal hospital will be doing.
  • Once you have your completed structure and the large pieces of equipment and daily supplies that you will need, it is time to hire employees. If you are not a licensed veterinarian, you will need one, as well as at least two veterinarian technicians, and a secretary to make and keep track of appointments and important paperwork.
  • The moment everything is in place, it is time to advertise and open the doors.

While some steps that must be taken to start an animal hospital seem rather large, the process is not as extensive in the grand scheme of things. The process is mostly time consuming because of the hurdles that must be cleared. Once they are, the dream of having an animal hospital is rather easy to make come true.
