How to Start a Courier Business

If you like to drive and have a dependable car a courier
service could be the business for you. A courier service picks
up and delivers packages, people, and sometimes pets to whatever
destination they ask within legal limits. There are always
people who need something delivered and with the U.S.P.S. and
UPS only delivering at certain times and taking at least a day
they are not always convenient.

Most couriers use automobiles to make their deliveries,
Bicycle deliveries only works in densely populated metropolitan
areas. The first thing you need to decide is how far you are
willing to travel to make deliveries. Generally the less
populated your location the further you may have to travel to
get enough business. The type of packages you want to deliver
may also be something to consider. Do you want to deliver people
and pets or just stick to packages? Do you want to be bonded and
carry sensitive materials or just stick to the basics?
You will also want to check with your insurance carrier to see
if it will change your coverage and maybe look into being a
bonded courier; it may be worth the extra cost. How much to
charge is also a big part, a standard per mile rate is good to
start with extra fees for fragile or sensitive materials. Make
it worth your time but don’t get carried away. Good luck with
your new business and happy travels.
