Direct Sales Addiction: Are You Addicted?

      Direct sales is addictive, take it from me. I'm going to let you into some secrets about just how addictive it can be, though few will ever admit it. If you recognize the signs you can take action so that you don't end up a direct sales junkie.

There are people who just can't resist recruitment drives for direct sales and end up signing up for one thing after another. These are the three things that hooked me:

* I needed more excitement
* I was eager to boost my income
* The products were really desirable

Probably the boredom got me most of all. I wanted happiness and thrills that would compensate for my boring life. I was bored with my ordinary job. Companies offered incentives like vacations, cars and houses. I fell for it all many times over.

I signed up with a bunch of companies and can report from personal experience that not all of them live up to their promises. I've signed with and hosted parties for some great companies but many I wouldn't recommend. You need to be able to separate good from bad. If you can avoid the mistakes I made you'll be off to a good start.

1. A couple of hours work a week will let you ditch the day job! If only this were true. Anything that's worth it is going to take more than that to make a profit. There's a lot of work in direct sales that isn't always obvious, like finding customers, keeping the books, and more.

2. You'll be one of our top sellers with a six figure salary - fast! Again, the secret is hard work. The truth is the six figure earnings may be exaggerated but there's a very good living to be made and that's a great motivation to put in the time and hard work that it demands.

3. You can work when you like. This is partly true. You might have some say over schedules but unless you can be flexible you won't be successful. For example, you have to consider the hostesses if you're selling at parties. When you're needed, you need to make yourself available.

4. If you recruit successfully the work load shrinks. The work load changes but other things come to the fore. You may be booking fewer party and shows but that time will be spent with your team. For them to succeed you have to put in the effort and time that makes a good team leader.

5. You're all set up once you have a starter kit. As the name suggests, the starter kit is for starting up. Other expenses may follow, depending on the business you're in. To be a consultant you may need to buy inventory or subscribe to a monthly payment plan. Think of the initial layout as just part of your total investment and figure out what that total sum is likely to add up to.

The golden rule is - before starting your direct sales business, wise up to what's involved before piling in thinking you've hit the jackpot. There will be down days, but you need to keep focus on business at all times. A good thing to remember is that something that looks to be too good to be true probably is.
