There are a few training organization in North America, including DONA (Doulas of North America) and ALACE (Association of Labor Assistants). There are also local training options, but currently, there is no certification required.

A doula offers mothers-to-be information and support (both physical and emotional). A doula is ideally empathetic, able to show compassion and good at dealin with difficult situations. Generally speaking, doulas encourage natural childbirth, but help mothers acquire the medical intervention where needed, according to the mother's birthing plan.

Doulas can find clients with doula agencies, independently, hospitals, birthing centers and working with mid-wives. Be sure to investigate any licensing requirements before getting started.
