Direct Sales Leaders:
Are You Ready to Lead?

If you feel you need to read this article, chances are you
are not a natural born leader. Most people who are natural born
leaders know it, and they already have what it takes without
needing articles, and therefore probably won't read it at all.
Leadership is a part of their personality.
Okay, you've established that you are not a natural born
leader. No worries, I've been there too and I can honestly say
leadership can be taught. I had to learn what being a leader
means, and it involved me having to grow in certain areas so
they now are natural things for me. And let me tell you, if I
can do it, you can too.

I have done certain things to increase my ability to be a good
leader, and I am going to show you some of them. Although these
things will require effort, time and even money from you, I
believe there is nothing better than investing in order to help
others. Anyone in a leadership position should be aiming at
helping others. If you go into leadership for another reason,
let's say for credit and glory with a sprinkling of recognition,
you are going about this the wrong way. That being said, if you
are in this leadership position for personal reasons only, you
could easily find yourself not being a leader for very long.
Let's start at the beginning by doing a little self-examination.
Start asking yourself questions like:
* What areas are my strong points? Am I shy and reserved, or
more naturally social? If your answer is shy and reserved, I
will recommend at this point you take classes or read an
assortment of books aimed at building self-confidence. If you're
a natural social butterfly, you should have no issues or
problems talking to people.
* Are prioritizing my time and organization skills I already
possess? Not everyone comes by these skills naturally. If these
things are struggles for you, take the time to practice.
Remember, practice makes perfect! Watching organizational or
time management programs on television, or keep an eye out for
DVD's you can purchase to keep on hand. Try your community's
activity schedule to see if they have any classes to offer, or
ask your up line for advice.
* Am I an available leader? Will I be successful in making time
for my clients and recruits? Do I have a short fuse when it
comes to unscheduled phone calls regarding an emergency or
urgent matter? If your recruit is in the middle of a show and
discovers she needs an answer as soon as possible to make a sale
or secure a booking, are you going to be there to answer her
question? Patience and understanding are paramount when you are
a leader in direct sales. Practicing patience will not only help
you to achieve it, but will set a good example for your recruits
as well.
* Good or bad attitude? Do I act like I'm better than others and
don't need their help? Or am I fully aware of the fact that
everyone makes mistakes, including myself? Do I learn quickly
from the mistake I made, or do I carry it with me and allow it
to get me down? If you are easily brought down because of your
mistakes, or those that others make resulting in a feeling of
defeat all the time, you are going to find it very difficult to
be a successful leader. People make mistakes, and others are
really good at pointing them out. The best recommendation I can
give you is to get over it, learn the lesson and keep moving on.
Don't let a simple mistake keep you from reaching any goals you
may have.
With patience, strength, perseverance and a good attitude you
could easily be leadership bound. By combining all these traits,
follow these tips and add in some leadership conferences and
good books on the subject and you too can be a great leader.
