A good leader possesses 5 traits. If these traits are not
naturally a part of who you are, I highly recommend you learn
them as soon as possible. Of course leadership is something that
can be learned. Simply because you are not a natural born leader
doesn't mean with a little you can't become a great one. In fact
there are some natural born leaders who don't do a very good job
at it in any case. (This brings up certain questions regarding
whether or not they are leaders at all. However, we will leave
that discussion for another day.) Okay, okay, you want to get to
those 5 traits, so here they are.
A Good Leader Actually Leads
I'm willing to bet that you have at some point seen someone in a
leadership position with nobody actually following them. There
is a saying that I find so true; "If you're leading but nobody
is following you, you are just taking a walk."
You have probably seen some leaders in action that did not come
upon this skill naturally. They had to learn what it takes to be
a good leader. It's entirely possible for you to do the same
thing. When you take on a position of leading people you also
take on the role of teacher as you stand by their side serving
them. They are being served by you as you give them an example
of your skills to follow.
It's just like teaching your children. If you never do the
dishes in your home, it would be difficult to teach your child
to accomplish this task adequately. It takes a few test-runs
with you by their side teaching them while doing the dishes with
them. When they are ready to tackle this task on their own, your
dishes will be cleaned, rinsed and put away properly.
When you are in a leadership position in direct sales the same
thing applies. You start out by showing your recruits how to do
things, and follow up with doing these same things with them.
The next part of this process is to help them make that first
step out into the direct sales world on their own. While you
need to invest much time and energy, there is no better place
than to help someone else.
Good Leaders Will Listen
Good leaders aren't people who think they already know
everything or who acts like she doesn't have time to hear what
her recruits or clients have to say. A good leader is one team
members can go to when they need help with something or
assistance in fixing a problem.
A good leader filters the good from the bad. Leaders have no
time for constant whiners and must discourage negative talk
about others. Over time you'll learn how to excuse yourself from
situations where gossip is going on so that you are not
affected.
A Leader is Available
A good leader makes sure she is available to clients and
recruits. They will undoubtedly have questions that only you can
answer. And, they will contact you at all times of the day.
Handle this situation with a schedule if you can. Let recruits
know that you are available for them at set times. Remember that
emergencies do happen; institute an "open door" policy just in
case.
A Good Leader Prioritizes and Stays Organized
No one is born knowing how to organize. It takes trial and error
to learn what method works best for you. Besides, juggling
business and personal life takes time and effort to balance.
There are dozens of books on the subject of organization to help
you learn the trait.
A Good Leader Pushes Obstacles Out of the Way
Everyone encounters obstacles in their professional and personal
lives. Sometimes the obstacle is a negative person. Listening to
too much negative talk can affect you. Learn to ignore the
negative in favor of the positive and attract positive things
into your life. Continue to pursue your goals despite any
obstacles.
Leadership qualities have been written about for a long time.
