Who is your potential buyer? Knowing your target audience
will help you to come up with ways to attract those customers.
Just marketing to everyone in hopes of finding buyers is like
searching for a needle in a haystack. We all know how that
scenario turns out.
Definition of a Niche
In the wild, every animal has their own established place. Birds
nest in trees (some on the ground) and some animals make their
home in caves or on the ground. If you want to feed a groundhog,
you wouldn't put food in a tree. A niche is a smaller portion of
a larger system.
Look at demographics. Out of 1,000 people in an area, about half
will be interested in your area of product. Out of those
remaining 500, half of those people are ripe for the picking
when it comes to your niche product. Even 250 people will bring
in a lot of cash for you.
What is your niche?
Settle in because a developing a niche takes some time. If this
is your first time ever selling on eBay, you may not get it
quite right. Use it as a training experience. Through your
bidders, you will discover that people purchase items for a
variety of reasons. Consider the following questions when
deciding what products to sell to attract the most buyers.
Is a need being met with your product?
Can it be used for entertainment purposes?
Is it a better solution for an existing problem?
You are on the right track if the product you want to sell can
satisfy at least one of the above questions. That doesn't
guarantee that you will make a sale or have a successful auction
but it can't hurt your chances.
Another avenue to take is looking at what everyone else is
selling on eBay. Study successful auctions and look at the size
of the winning bids. Certain products are seasonal and sell
better at those times. Other sellers have established excellent
track records and have repeat customers.
Use these questions and other advice to determine a successful
niche for yourself. Don't forget that others may have had the
same idea that you had and already could have your first niche
choice established. That however doesn't mean that it has been
exhausted. You can still get your piece of the pie.
You could also be the first one to explore an as yet untapped
niche. Before you get visions of millions of dollars dancing in
your head, it's more likely that you will expand an existing
niche to meet your needs. In either case, research is the key to
save you time and money auctioning products that won't sell.
