How to Start an Herbalist Business

Herbalist

An herbalist is someone who has studied the healing properties of plants and herbs. This person has either studied herbology or naturopathic medicine, and has developed an understanding of the connection between nature's plants and the human body.

The profession is still considered to be an alternative form of treatment, though it has gained more recognition and acceptance in the West. Herbs have long been used in the Asia and Africa to treat illnesses and discomforts.

There are several conditions that herbalists have been treating for some time. Some of the conditions include diabetes, arthritis and cancer. Herbalists will examine the condition of the patient, and then prescribe a regimen of herbs, plants or spices for the patient to follow. This usually involves a change in the patient's lifestyle as well, such as diet and exercise.

In addition to treating patients, herbalists are continuously studying how plants and herbs can treat the various conditions of the human body. But people don't just see herbalists when they have a health condition. Many people are opting for a natural lifestyle, and may see herbalists for advice on improving their health. So herbalists may also help people make healthier lifestyle choices.

What is required to become an Herbalist?

It may not be necessary to have a formal education in herbal medicine, though you need to consider the regulations where in you intend to practice. There are many private courses in herbal medicine, and some colleges also offer courses in herbology.

It may be a better career choice for the long-term to gain a formal education if you intend to make this your lifetime profession. Depending on where you study, it can take as little as 3-4 months to become an herbalist.

Herbalists often work from home, if they practice alone. However, many herbalists set up a clinic with other herbalists or alternative health practitioners so they can gain exposure, offer more services, reach more clientele, and share advertising and operating costs.

Perhaps the most important requirement for running your business safely is to have the appropriate insurances set up, to minimize any risk or liability to your business.

Also make sure you have any necessary forms and waivers for patients to sign, again depending on where you intend to practice.

You should have a system for recording all of your interactions with patients. There are medical software applications available, but you will need to find something that works effectively for being an herbalist.
