How to Become an Inventor

As a child you may have enjoyed taking things apart and putting them back together again, much to the chagrin of your parents. You dreamed of becoming an inventor and inventing great things. You can still fulfill that childhood dream and here's how you can do it.

FAST TRACK!: Get your step-by-step inventor guide here.

Becoming an inventor is more than simply making things. It helps if you're already scientifically and mechanically inclined. The more you can learn about how things work the closer you'll be to your goal.

It also helps if you become a student of people. Listen to them; they may provide you with ample ideas for inventions. If several people have a problem with a particular product, others may have the same problem. That's your clue to find a way to improve it and meet their need.

Learn about the patent process. If you make a great invention, you'll want to protect it. Knowing what and when to patent a new invention will prevent someone else stealing your idea. Of course, you'll want to know if your invention is worth protecting before you begin the patent process.

Get others involved in your dream. Ask friends and family to test out your inventions to see if you have a winner. Then learn to market your invention so others can benefit from it as well. Having a solid business plan will help you obtain funding if your invention is a hit and becomes popular enough to sell to the general public.
