Starting a Restaurant Business - Set Yourself Apart
So you want to open a restaurant? One thing you should constantly keep in mind as a restaurant owner is this; every business has competition and a restaurant is no exception. As a matter of fact, a restaurant business might just be a little harder to keep going in comparison to other types of businesses because of the competition factor.
According to a 2005 study that appeared in Cornell Hotel and Restaurant Administration Quarterly Magazine, 27% of all restaurants end up closing their doors before they reach their first birthday and within 3 years that total rises to 60 percent. Those numbers aren’t as high as much of society has been lead to believe, but they are proof that it takes something unique to make it in the restaurant business.
Consumers want good service and quality meals if they are going to spend their hard earned money eating out. Who can blame them? When you give them what they are looking for, word spreads like wildfire. Those people will not only tell others about your establishment, but they will also bring people into it if they enjoy their dining experience.
The key to surviving your competition as a restaurant owner is to set yourself apart from all the others. One great example of a restaurant that does just that is Hard Rock Café. By combining people’s love of food and music, they have created a one-of-a-kind restaurant that customers flock to. Customers not only go for the food but the entertainment as well. It is obvious this worked well for them by the placement of Hard Rock Café’s all over the world.
There are lots of examples of restaurants that are well known because of one particular thing. Unfortunately, there are many more that didn’t stand out from the crowd enough to make it. Whether it is the type of food you offer, low prices, your excellent and unique customer service or a combination of all of them, you must set yourself apart from other restaurants.
You don’t have to compete with places like Hard Rock or McDonald’s (unless that is your goal of course), but you do need to research and create a solid plan for your restaurant business, no matter how small your market is. Preparation and keeping ahead of the competition will play a huge role in how long the doors of your restaurant remain open.
