Start a Home Based Sewing Business
Do
you sew? Are you handy with hemming and other small sewing
tasks? If so, you could begin a home-based business as a
stitching expert. These days, people are very busy, and it would
be very helpful to them to have a local person to attend to
their sewing and mending needs.
Of course, you would have to be good at your job, so that means
perhaps taking a bit of training. Perhaps a night-school course
at the local high school, or a workshop with a sewing shop in
your town. Get as much knowledge as possible before you sew for
anyone. Practise doing little jobs for your family and friends
free of charge.
Start up funds would be minimal: needles of all sizes, different thread
colors (use the best you can buy), a measuring tape, chalk and a
full-length mirror. You would work from home so there wouldn't be any
extra overhead to consider. You will, of course, have a reliable sewing
machine already. If not, your costs will now skyrocket, as good machines
are expensive.
A few ads in your local newspaper and at local supermarkets, and you will
soon have people coming to you for your services. You could have flyers
and business cards made, or do them yourself if you have a computer and a
printer. If you are good at your work and have a relatively quick
turnaround, you will soon be in demand. Word of mouth is the best way to
advertise at first. Always contact friends and family and let them know
what you are planning.
This kind of work has many facets. You could branch out into making
colorful scarves to order, or small throw pillows and other decorative
household items. How about tote bags made to a customer's specifications?
The sky is the limit as to what you can come up with.
Will your town let you put a sign in front of your house? Find out the
local rules for having a home business, and be professional in your
dealings with customers. Keep all receipts and tax-related materials for
your tax return.
