Determine how much financing you'll need. You may have savings to fall back on, but if you don't, getting financing is one of the first things you'll want to consider. Develop a business plan which will explain how you plan to run your business, how you'll make money, and how you'll pay any business loans back.

Set up your business by choosing a name, finding a location (unless working from home), getting any licenses necessary, and setting up pay rates and ways to accept pay. Then begin marketing your business by advertising and networking. Joining the local Chamber of Commerce will give you a place to network and provide other benefits.

Be sure to keep good financial records. This may mean learning accounting or hiring someone. Remember to keep your personal and business finances separate. It will make filing taxes much easier.

Consider setting up a website. This will give you another way to draw in customers especially if the area you live doesn't have a need for technical writers.

Keep your writing skills up to date. Take classes, attend writing seminars or purchase books which will help you improve. Never stop learning particularly in your chosen field of technical expertise.
